Robin's Blog - Fairness or Equality?

11th April 2009

The publication by the Department for Communities and Local Government of 'Tackling Race Inequalities' is timely, particularly in the light of the recent very public difficulties of Equality and Human Rights Commission. Significantly, the document positions the discussion of the issues of race in modern Britain in the context of what it calls the 'broader equality and fairness agenda'. Does this imply a weaker level of commitment to legislative change in order to tackle race inequalities? Is 'fairness' the correct test of whether the actions or inactions of individuals, institutions and Government are to be regarded as legal and open to challenge.

Nonetheless, the publication of this discussion document is to be welcomed as it provides a clear focus on the question of race and is also an opportunity to contribute to a debate about what an effective race equality strategy would look like today. The Network will be responding to the document. The views of members, friends and supporters will feed into this response and your comments will are welcomed.
