Elizabeth addresses the Arnold Bennett & H G Wells Conference

21/06/2009
Elizabeth Negus

Elizabeth Negus, Head of English at Barking College recently presented a very well received paper at the Arnold Bennett and H G Wells joint conference in Stoke-on-Trent. Entitled Wells and Bennett: Public Visionaries or Private Dreamers of Our Time?, Elizabeth was the only woman and the only black presenter at the conference alongside significant academics from UK universities. The paper is being published later in the year and it will be Elisabeth’s third published paper on this area of work.

Since delivering her paper, Elizabeth had the opportunity to discuss her work with acclaimed writer Dame Margaret Drabble and has also received an invitation from Dr Jonathan Wild,  Deputy Director of The Centre for the History of the Book and Lecturer in Victorian Literature at Edinburgh University to further develop the ideas in her paper for future publication.

Elizabeth teaches A Level and Access students at Barking College. Two of her recent students have progressed into careers in writing and one has recently landed a book contract with Collins and Harper. For Elizabeth, the delight in seeing her own writing praised by significant academic authorities is matched only by the pleasure that is obtained from seeing former FE students going on to achieve excellence in the literary world.
