The Network’s Annual Meeting took place on the 17th November as part of the AoC Annual Conference. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of our 2009 awards to three individuals who have shown outstanding Leadership in Race Equality.
Richard Chambers, Principal of Lambeth College, received his award because he encouraged over 60 Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) managers to attend the First Steps to Leadership programme, funded by CEL (now LSIS). This was a major contribution not only to the leadership of Lambeth College, but also to the talent pool of the learning and skills sector as a whole.
Thalia Marriott was awarded for her long-term commitment to race equality, first as principal of West Thames College, where she became a Black Leadership Initiative (BLI) mentor and took a lead role in the work of the West London colleges to address BME staff under-representation and now as director of the Women’s Leadership Network, fostering closer links and partnership work with the BLI and the Network.
Gloria Dolan gained her award for her pivotal contribution to the success of the Ofsted Inspection Shadowing programme. This positive action intervention, funded by LSIS, has been an outstanding success, and has influenced the development of over 250 FE managers. It has since been extended into the schools sector in a powerful partnership with the National College for Leadership of Schools & Children’s Services. Gloria’s dynamism and commitment have been key to the success of this programme.
